“Danganronpa 3 the End of Kibougamine Gakuen” is the penultimate episode of the anime Danganronpa, which was first aired in Japan in 2021. The previous episode ended with the death of Hachikuma. I think this might be a mistake because Hachikuma didn’t die in the previous episode. I’ll just say that it is not confirmed whether he will or not die in the upcoming episodes.
Now, let’s see what happens in this newest episode. Hachikuma suddenly passes away in a plane crash while he and his fellow passengers are on the ground. As the news reports about his death spreads, people are looking for answers to the causes of the accident. And when another plane crashes near the scene, triggering more disasters, it seems the whole school got affected by the disaster. Everyone is in a mess; not only are they losing their loved ones but they can’t find out what happened to Hachikuma and the rest of the students from the earlier plane crash.
With the aid of Zero, a mysterious young man with supernatural powers, they now try to figure out where Zero came from. Hachikuma somehow regained his consciousness and sees something before him. He sees himself and some other students from his former life; the reason for this is unknown. However, he realizes that something terrible happened during the school events; some of his classmates and the school headmaster were brutally killed by terrorists, probably a result of the greed of some people, probably the teachers, to get hold of the school’s power.
In order to escape, Hachikuma takes Zero with him. Shortly after they escaped, they discover that Zero is a spirit guide who brings them to save the students from the terrorists. Unfortunately, the terrorists managed to escape; and manage to kill most of the students on the way. Hachikuma and Zero then finds the bodies and finds a mysterious figure, who then transforms himself into a young boy. He then leads Hachikuma and Zero to a huge building, where the rest of the students were taken.
There, he finds several children, who look like their father. The father is being controlled by several children and tries to kill them. But he couldn’t kill them all, so he leaves them in a room, and they lock the doors. Inside the room, there are children who have already lost their memories. One of the children has also lost his heart, which is why he needs Zero’s help to find the lost memories of his children; thus, saving them, too.
Meanwhile, back at school, another explosion happens near the school. When the smoke clears, one of the students falls dead. With this, a search begins for the other survivors. Hachikuma eventually finds out that they were only sent there by their principal, who had ordered the incinerators to be put to full blast just to be on the safe side. After finding one child who managed to escape, they hurry to the library, where they find out that the incinerators were already there, waiting for the school’s students to arrive.
During this whole episode, the children notice a very strong presence, or Voids, of dark energy covering the entire place. It is later discovered that the Voids were the souls of the students who went missing. Hachikuma and Kazusa soon discover that the dark energy covering the place was the cause of the students’ despair. In order to defeat the Voids, the three of them split up and take turns fighting the creatures. Hachikuma eventually gets control of Zero’s gun, and manages to shoot the last Void before it kills Zero.
Afterwards, the school’s janitor, Mrs. Hagiwara, arrives and realizes that something is wrong with the school. When she runs into the classroom, she sees the bodies of the students who were affected by the Despair Disease; when she tries to close the classroom door, however, it won’t open anymore, and she is stuck inside it. In the end, with the help of Kazusa and Hachikuma, the school’s teacher, she is able to close the door; however, she too gets trapped inside the room, and dies afterwards.
